Rain, rain go away. Come again some….wait, no

IMG_0026Last week I posted about the rain and this week I’m going to talk a little more about it.  I know I may seem like a broken record, but this last year I have spent a LOT OF TIME talking to customers about their systems and the effects of Mother Nature in their functionality.  The memes I include today may be funny, but what rain and extra moisture can do to your septic system is definitely NOT a laughing matter.

If you are a faithful reader, you have heard this before, but water coming both inside the house and outside from Mother Nature plays a HUGE role in how your septic system functions.  Since October of 2018, the state of Nebraska has received MASSIVE totals of rainfall and snow.  Heck, we almost broke our snow fall record this year!  We are currently sitting at 10 inches over the normal rainfall totals for 2019.  That’s a LOT of moisture for the soil and though systems are designed to handle a lot from the outside forces of nature, there are always exceptions to the rule…say fall of 2018 to the fall of 2019…maybe even the winter of 2019-20? (If you believe in Farmer’s Almanac reports!)

So, what can you do as a septic-living-homeowner when these crazy wet seasons occur?  Well, first off, just being mindful of your water usage is always a good idea when living on septic.  Here are some things you can do as a homeowner to help with the water running through or to your system:

1) Do loads of laundry throughout the week instead of all on one day.  This slows the amount of water you’re asking your soil to absorb.

2)  Reduce the length of shower time

3)  Reduce the number of times your water softner re-charges in a week

4)  Try not to run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time

5)  Divert run-off water or downspouts AWAY from your lateral field

6)  Make sure you don’t have any “running” toilets or other possible water leaks in the house (sometimes whole-house humidifiers can cause a septic system grief too!)

All of these items help in the functionality of your system no matter what time of year it is, but ESPECIALLY during times of excessive precipitation.

Older systems tend to have more struggles with the huge amounts of rain and snow, but it’s always a good idea to be careful of water usage no matter what the age of the system.  When standing water or possible back ups occur, we can come pump your tank, but this will only relieve the situation for a while until the laterals have had a chance to dry out (when the back up or standing water is due to excessive weather conditions).  Our biggest problem this year has been being able to access the tank for customers.  When the ground is wet or soft, we politely refuse to get on fields or yards – we aren’t exactly a light vehicle when we arrive and we are heavier when we leave!  We can run hose some distance, but there have been tanks this year so far away we can’t always pump them – so if we can prevent these issues prematurely with careful water usage that is always a plus!

Hope you find this information helpful! Together we can survive whatever Mother Nature throws at us!

NATIONAL SMART SEPTIC WEEK — septic system maintenance

Posted by on 5:11 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I bet you thought you were done reading about septic-related topics, didn’t you?!  According to my watch, I still get today and tomorrow, so hold on to your horses!                                       Today I want to talk about septic system maintenance and what all that entails.  Unfortunately, it has been our experience that many people tend to think this about their septic system — “out of sight, out of mind.” Which, I...

NATIONAL SMART SEPTIC WEEK — What do YOU Talk About Every Day?

Posted by on 1:50 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Day three of our National Smart Septic week…I’m milking this for all it’s worth, can you tell? I gotta take what’s been given to me! Do you remember the Late Show with David Letterman?  He used to have his TOP TEN LIST poking fun at just about anything.   Ring any bells?  It hit me the other day that I could also make a list of the “most talked about subjects” in the septic business.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear what I talk about all day? Am I right? (If you’re still reading, please call me so we can be...

NATIONAL SMART SEPTIC WEEK — Toilet Paper

Posted by on 5:28 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I figured if I hold tight to the claim NATIONAL SMART SEPTIC WEEK, then that means I can post about septic related topics Monday through Friday, right? So next on my list is the subject of TOILET PAPER. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist a little toilet paper meme…) But honestly, don’t we all want to talk about toilet paper?  Since you’re still reading, I’m going to assume that’s a yes… Though toilet paper may seem like a simple item of purchase that has no real effect on your life, it can lead to complicated...

NATIONAL SEPTIC WEEK…yep, it’s a thing!

Posted by on 2:45 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

So, I realize it has been a while, but I was so excited to learn some super “fun facts” about my industry!  Did you know, there is a National Septic Week?! I promise, I’m not lying. It is actually September 17-21 (not sure why we don’t get a Monday-Friday kind of week, but I will take what I can!)  Obviously, when this fabulous information came to me, I had to break out the old “writing fingers” and share this news with the WORLD!  (Or at last my very small following of readers…the people who feel...

HOME-BASED BUSINESS + KIDS = BALD MOM

Posted by on 8:15 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Ever hear the saying, “cleaning with kids in the house is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos”?  I feel like something similar could be said about running a home-based business during summer break.   Here’s how I would phrase it though: “Running a home-based business while your kids are out on summer vacation is like putting together an atomic bomb during an elephant stampede.”   Honestly, I am really okay with the distractions and craziness kids bring to an environment.  Having once taught in a junior high science...

ROCKY RACCOON

Posted by on 6:06 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Last week we were hit again with some rain.  Shocker, right?   Once again, despite the fact that we had our schedule up and ready to go, we were forced to tweak it to compensate for the rain.  But, this time around, we were also in the middle of something personal too – having a new roof put on.  Obviously, roofers can’t work in the rain either.  No major deal really.  Honestly, I found myself feeling a partnership with my rained-out-roofer-friends as they too were experiencing frustrating issues with rain (not to mention this time...

WATER AND RAIN FLOODING THE BRAIN

Posted by on 5:36 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I can’t seem to think of much to write about this week.  Lately, anything that pops into my brain is items related either to rain or water  or water usage.  For instance….   I wonder if it is going to rain. If it rains, I wonder how much. If it rains a lot, I wonder how many calls we will get and if I will not see my husband again for two days. If it rains a lot, how many people will be able to help and how many will be in situations where we can’t help them? What kind of posts about water usage can I put on Facebook to help readers with...

RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS

Posted by on 7:44 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

You know the old Carpenter’s Song, “Rainy Days and Mondays?”  The lyrics go, “rainy days and Mondays always get me down…”  Well, here in Lincoln, rainy days that happen ANY day of the week are starting to get me down.  I know I try to make light of the rainfall, but the last month and a half have been frustrating for us septic people.   Believe me, I am not complaining about the rain because I can’t go out and work on my tan.  I complain because of all the problems it causes for our customers and our ability to get everyone taken care...

ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF BUSINESS?

Posted by on 2:13 pm in Uncategorized | 0 comments

So, there’s this stuff called rain…and we have been receiving quite a bit of it.  Maybe you tire from me talking about it, but considering the fact that our business is pretty weather dependent…and by dependent I mean, dependent on it NOT raining….it has affected us in a crazy way.  On our pumping side, we are going like gang busters!!  Lots of rain means lots of pumping!!  On our dirt-work side, we have gotten very little done as the ground is just too wet.  Ugh…the frustrations I feel!!  I hate “to do” lists that never become “to DONE”...
